Hugo

Hugo is new to Homeless Hounds and this luck little fella has gone and got himself a lovely foster home, living with the resident dogs, and we can certainly inform you, he is thriving.

This is what his foster daddy has to say about Hugo.

Named after the French author, Victor Hugo, but this lovely lad is far, far from “Le Miserable!!”
Hugo is a very lovable French Bulldog puppy handed in unchipped to the dog warden as a stray. As he is beginning to lose his puppy teeth, the Vet thinks he is 16 – 20 weeks old. There was a thought that he could have some Boston Terrier as well but again the vet thinks not as his ears are too rounded and he’s a chunky little fellow and too big for a Boston.
Hugo was handed in to the dog warden early in August in good condition but hasn’t been claimed so has now joined the “Homeless Hounds” team for rehoming.
He arrived with his current foster quivering like a jelly, but this was a complete con as once on the floor he immediately ran around with his three much larger, new housemates as if he owned the place!!

He’s actually so darned cute his “big dogs only” fosterers would keep him “without hesitation” but for the fact they are moving out of the area to be near to an incoming first Grandchild!
He is a super, lovable dog – very friendly with people and wants to introduce himself to any dogs he meets. He will jump up with excitement first thing in a morning but is improving – we simply say nothing and turn our backs. He doesn’t appear to have an aggressive bone in his body except in noisy play and gets on well with the other resident large dogs where he is currently fostered. He knows which dogs will play and wrestle with him – he particularly likes beating up a very tolerant Bloodhound who is over five times his weight!! He can sound a bit over the top whilst playing but he responds to being told to “cool it!”

He arrived nameless but responded to “Hugo” and learnt to sit within 24 Hours – he’s a smart cookie but this was all in response to positive use of small treats – he will be a doddle to train as he’s very food orientated. Because of his enthusiasm for food, he wolfs it down and then looks to clear up anything left by the other dogs – so we feed him separately using a “slow feeder bowl “. Treats are usually puppy kibble.
We have started house training him by frequent toilet break opportunities supported by lots of praise and instant giving of treats and he has responded well to this positive reinforcement during the day being 95% clean, but it will need to be continued. He is using puppy pads at night, and they’re gradually being moved towards the back door. He needs to be let out first thing and after meals.

He’s had his first vaccination, second due early September and then he’ll be able to go out two weeks later. Also had the usual worm and flea treatments. We will start lead training him in the house so he’s confident when taken out later.
He is enthusiastic in play with toys and will happily investigate everything in the toybox and spread them around the room. He actively seeks out “Nyla bone” type chews from the box but has never chewed anything he shouldn’t have apart from our fingers!!
He can be left on his own (isolated in the kitchen) but prefers being with the other dogs.
He could happily co-exist with other dogs. We haven’t had chance to see him with cats but could be tested if necessary.
Hugo will make someone a wonderful, cheeky and entertaining pet – he’s a bit of a Star already!
