Adoption Policy & Procedure

If you are considering adopting one of our beautiful Homeless Hounds dogs, please read this section in full. The next step is to fill in an Adoption Application form. This tells us a bit about you and what you are looking for in your new family addition.

At Homeless Hounds we like to make the best match possible for both you and the dog, so please don’t worry if your first application is not successful. We take extra care as we do not want dogs being returned because this is stressful for all concerned.

We welcome applications from across Lancashire but unfortunately we are unable to consider applications from further afield due to logistical reasons. If you own other pets, or if you have children, including children who visit your home, please include this information in your application. Unfortunately, we cannot process applications from families with children under 5 years old.

Before you submit your application, please consider important factors involved in dog ownership – for eg: do you have funds to care for a dog, including vet treatments? are you in good health and able to walk a dog daily? do you work long hours away from home?

We reserve the right to refuse an application at any stage if we feel that it is not in the dog’s best interest to be placed with the applicant.

Homecheck

Before you are able to adopt one of our dogs you will need a homecheck. This is where a volunteer assigned by Homeless Hounds will arrange to visit you in your home and check that you have suitable accommodation and discuss your experience and expectations. We evaluate all home environments equally.

Meet and Greet

Should your application and home check be successful, we would then arrange a ‘meet and greet’. This is where you will visit the dog, either at the kennels or the foster home, and introduce yourselves to them. It is important that all members of the family who will be living with the dog and any dogs of your own attend the meet and greet. This way you will get an accurate impression of how the dog interacts with you.

After this meeting we will contact you for feedback and discuss the next step.

Collecting Your Dog

Once you have had a successful meet and you have all the necessary equipment in place (bed, lead/collar, food, bowls, toys, crate/dog gate etc) you will be able to arrange to collect your new addition and start a home trial period. This leads straight to the happiest stage of the official adoption!

Homeless Hounds request an adoption donation of £150.00 minimum (£200.00 with effect from 1st March 2023). Visit the FAQs to find out why we request an adoption donation and where the money is spent.

We will keep in touch with you and your new dog once you have taken them home. Thank you for giving a special dog a new start in life – in return they will give you their lasting love and friendship
